Fukuyama Transporting Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Fukuyama City Hiroshima Prefecture; President: Shigehiro Komaru) and the Komaru Koutsu Foundation (Chief Director: Shigehiro Komaru) have donated approximately 500 Japanese books to the Komaru Library at Vytautas Magnus University (Republic of Lithuania) to be used for Japanese language education since the opening of Komaru Library in 2019.
This year, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the friendship between Japan and the Republic of Lithuania, we held a donation ceremony on April 30 in the presence of Mr. Tetsu Ozaki, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Embassy of Japan in Lithuania, and Mr. Toyoei Shigeeda, former Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Embassy of Japan in Lithuania.
Through the KOMARU Library, we will continue to serve as a good place for interaction between students studying Japanese, to further deepen mutual understanding and to strengthen friendly relations between the two countries.
Our company, Shigehiro Komaru, has served as Honorary Consul of the Republic of Lithuania in Fukuyama since January 2017 and was appointed Honorary Consul General in February 2021. We are striving to promote friendship and goodwill through economic, cultural, and educational exchanges with both countries, for instance, by conducting goodwill visits to the Republic of Lithuania on Japan's first direct flight by chartered aircraft. In addition, on August 12, 2018, Fukuyama Transporting formed a business alliance with HOPTRANS of the Republic of Lithuania to promote cultural and academic exchanges in addition to the economic field.
Komaru Koutsu Foundation was founded on September 9th, 2013 to promote traffic safety awareness, hosting various traffic safety lectures in Elementary schools across Japan and carrying out educational activities to prevent traffic accidents. Overseas, it holds Japanese composition speech contests to provide opportunities for students to present the results of their Japanese language studies and to promote cultural exchange with Japan and also raise awareness of traffic safety that is relevant to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) we support.
